Eight months after his arrival in Buna (more about those eight months shortly), Steinberg, like Levi, appeared before Dr. Pannwitz to take an oral exam.

He asked me my age. “Eighteen,” I said, stretching it a bit. “What have you studied?” I was off and running. A speech prepared in advance and rehearsed twenty times. I told him that I’d been the youngest in my year to pass the baccalauréat exam, that I was crazy about chemistry, that I’d also taken the entrance exam at the Institut de Chimie de Paris on rue Pierre-Curie, that I’d passed on the first try with an outstanding grade in chemistry, an average grade in math, and a mediocre one in physics (to make everything seem more plausible) ... .

He looked at me doubtfully and said, “Well, let’s see, you’re good in analytic chemistry. Tell me something about the chemistry of chromium.” I closed my eyes and distinctly saw the page on chromium in the holy book. As clear as a photo. I calmly reeled off the series of reagents and precipitates from A to Z... .

He raised his glasses slightly and I had the feeling that I’d done it. “That’s fine,” he told me, “you can go.”72
